Satellite Master Antenna Television Systems (SMATV)

A miniature, communal Cable Television (CATV) system that receives video and radio signal programming by
one or more satellite, over-the-air, or microwave antennas and redistributes these signals to a housing
complex or hotel. SMATV is often used by Private Cable Operators (PCO)s to deliver video services to Multiple
Dwelling Units (MDU) buildings. SMATV systems do not use public rights-of-way; hence, the FCC has
determined that they fall outside of the Communications Act’s definition of a cable system.
